WHAT HAPPENS AT A WATER EXPLORER KICK-STARTER WORKSHOP?

In May the Water Explorer team went to St. George’s National School in Balbriggan for a Kickstarter Workshop with 1st class students. Student’s were challenged with generating ideas of different ways to conserve water and to then promote them around the school.

HOW CAN YOUR SCHOOL SAVE WATER?

With the focus on WATER, 1st class students were introduced to the importance of saving water and learned about what changes they could each make at home to save water.

With help from the Water Explorer team they came up with the following changes:

  1. Use a bucket instead of a hose pipe to wash your car
  2. Do not leave the water running while you’re washing dishes
  3. Don’t shower for more than 5 minutes
  4. Do not leave the water running while you’re brushing your teeth
  5. Only bathe in ankle deep water

By implementing these changes, student’s learned that:

  1. A hose pipe uses up to 500 litres per hour
  2. Leaving the tap running wastes 6 litres per minute
  3. You only use 35 litres if you shower for 5 minutes
  4. Leaving the tap running wastes 6 litres per minute
  5. Plants prefer rain water as it does not have fluoride and chlorine
  6. Save up to 80 litres if you don’t fill up the tub
