The Global Action Plan ‘Sustainable Christmas’ conversation has reached its fifth day, and today we are discussing how best to save on harmful waste through the theme of food!
Food is central to all Christmas celebrations, and we think it’s an important place to think about sustainably.
- Firstly, if we are to consider the amount of CO2 emissions being produced by the raising and transportation of livestock: “just 1kg of beef produces 27kg of CO2e, enough to travel 63 miles by car,” which roughly only feeds about four people. As a result, consider choosing the vegetarian option this Christmas, or at least reducing your meat consumption – as even a minor reduction could help combat the wellbeing of our planet.
- Secondly, try to prepare, plan and serve the correct amount of food in order to minimise waste, and if you do cook too much, ensure that you donate it to a food bank and make someone else’s Christmas count with a gifted meal!
- Finally, do some re-working of your cooking schedule for the big day if need be and cook as many things at the same time as possible – this way, you can conserve energy, time, and money on your festive food preparations!
