GAP has partnered with a number of organisations in the border area for the Community Climate Leadership Training project.

This cross-border initiative supports local people and community leaders in Cavan and Fermanagh to build the skills, knowledge and networks needed to take meaningful climate action and strengthen community resilience.

The leadership training programme is part of the โ€œEmpowering Communities for Climate Changeโ€ initiative, and is funded by the International Fund for Ireland, with support from Cavan County Local Development and the Fermanagh Trust. It combines in-person workshops, online learning, expert-led webinars and community field trips. Together, these activities give participants the chance to explore practical topics such as renewable energy, climate adaptation, waste and the circular economy, biodiversity and water management.

Each session is tailored to local needs, with plenty of opportunities for discussion, hands-on learning and practical skill-building.

Local climate action leadership

A key focus is on nurturing local climate leaders. Using approaches like The Work that Reconnects and the Community Climate Coaches framework, the programme helps participants grow their confidence, develop systems thinking, and learn how to lead collaborative action in their communities.

Learning is supported through an interactive Online Classroom, where participants can access resources, recordings and peer support at their own pace. Field trips bring the learning to life by connecting communities with real examples of climate action and encouraging collaboration across the border.

At its heart, this project is about connection.

GAP will help to connect people who care about climate action and want to make a difference locally. Together, we are building a movement for resilient, sustainable communities in Cavan and Fermanagh.
