30 April is Stop Food Waste Day, an important reminder that how we produce, use and value our food has a huge impact on the planet.
But tackling food waste isn’t just about what we throw away. It’s also about reconnecting with where our food comes from.
At Global Action Plan Ireland, we believe that growing your own food is one of the most powerful ways to reduce waste and live more sustainably.
Whether it’s a small windowsill herb garden, a few raised beds, or a full community plot, growing even a little of what you eat helps you:
-
- Appreciate the true value of food, and waste less of it.
-
- Eat seasonally and locally, cutting down the carbon footprint of imported goods.
-
- Build resilience and self-sufficiency in your home and community.
-
- Spark wider sustainable habits, like composting, seed saving, and sharing surplus with others.
When you sow a seed, you’re also sowing the idea that small actions matter.
This Stop Food Waste Day, we encourage everyone to get growing. It’s not just good for your plate; it’s good for the planet.
