A study published in Nature Communications highlights a big challenge in tackling climate change: the “carbon perception gap.”

This term refers to the fact that most people do understand that wealthier individuals produce far more emissions, but that they also believe that they themselves are not the problem, even if they fall in the “wealthy” category.

The study shows that, by and large, people believe they are doing more for the planet than they actually are.

The research, titled The Carbon Perception Gap in Actual and Ideal Carbon Footprints Across Wealth Groups, shows a widespread desire for fairness in climate responsibility. Yet many of us believe that we are already “doing our part,” even when the data tells a different story.

Because people think they’re already doing enough, they’re often less open to the deeper changes – both personal and political – that real climate progress requires.

At GAP Ireland, this is exactly the kind of behavioural barrier we work to overcome every day.

Through our work with community groups, schools and businesses all over Ireland, we help people go beyond awareness and take practical, measurable action.

Take, for instance, our Climate Heroes challenges: In just 2 weeks, participants in this unique competition for community groups reduced their carbon footprints by some 20-30%, preventing the emission of over 36,800 kg of CO₂e.

These results show what behavioural science already tells us: when sustainable actions are made accessible, social and rewarding, people rise to the challenge.

We know that people care, and that people want change.

When people see their own impact, and see how others are taking practical action, sustainable living feels more real and achievable.

That’s why programmes that inform, engage and empower are so crucial.

For us, closing the perception gap isn’t just about awareness. Rather, it is about equipping people and communities to take charge of their future, and shape a fairer world.

GAP Ireland empowers people to lead the change they want to see.

Each of us holds the power to nurture change
