Carbon Gym

There are lots of statistics about CO2 out there but as we cannot see CO2 it is difficult to fully comprehend how to reduce your emissions. Specially commissioned for Global Action Plan, the Carbon Gym is a unique system where participants can ‘feel’ the effects of CO2.

Users can see and feel the effects of CO2 by stepping to try to inflate three columns of air, which represent the amount of CO2 emitted when travelling by train, car and plane. Users can also feel the associated weight of this CO2 with dumbbells. It provides an all round environmental workout for the brain and body!

The aim of the gym is to help people make the connection between their daily lifestyles and climate change. The gym contains two pieces of equipment:

Carbon weights – these show the different levels of carbon created through various lifestyle choices. People feel the weight of CO2 produced by different forms of travel and food miles. They are challenged to lift the weight of carbon their choices produce.

Carbon stepper – the  machine is adapted so when in use it inflates three columns representing the amount of CO2 emitted travelling 2kms by air, car and train. This helps rowers to visualise the volume of CO2 produced by their travel choices.
