Rearing to Grow
The Rearing to Grow Programme is about empowering young people to take ownership of their outdoor spaces and take advantage of the outdoor environment. This can be in the way of brightening up a communal space, growing vegetables in your school garden or creating a biodiversity area in your youth centre. This more physical and experimental way of learning suits many young people and can be the starting point for inspiring action to protect and conserve the natural environment enabling lifelong sustainable behaviours and attitudes.
How does it work?
The Programme focuses on:
- Biodiversity - habitat creation, nature corridors such as hedgerows, wild areas, flowers and shrubs for attracting insects.
- Water Conservation & Waste Management - rainwater collection, mulching, composting, reusing plastic pots and containers for plants and seed sowing.
- Healthy Eating Promotion - organic vegetable growing, fruit bushes and orchards.
Work is carried out throughout the year, using the seasons as themes for the Programme.
