Action at School
Between 2007 and 2010 Global Action Plan has worked with 10 schools in Ireland, delivering ‘Action on Waste’, ‘Action on Energy’ and ‘Action on Water’. These projects have been supported by Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, South Dublin County Council and the Body-shop Foundation. The project has been adapted from the GAP UK model to suit the needs of Irish schools and include the relevant background information and resources specific to Ireland.
The programme
Action at School is an environmental programme that helps schools to save resources and money. The programme helps schools to tackle waste, water, energy or transport over three terms.
How does it work?
The process is quite unique and involves the formation of an Action Team that includes students, teachers, school site managers, caretaking staff and governors.
We train the Action Team and help them:
- Measure their school’s environmental impact
- Set improvement targets
- Communicate effectively
- Build partnerships with local community organisations
Students are encouraged to come up with imaginative solutions and lead the way in implementing them, gaining skills in decision-making and project management.
The story so far
To date Global Action Plan has worked with over 10 schools in Dublin and reached hundreds of people. These schools have achieved:
- An average reduction of 40% in waste to landfill
- An 11% reduction in their use of gas and electricity
